"Money was just money. Pennies added to dollars and dollars added to hundreds."
You know that feeling you get when an opera singer is at the end of a song and she just gives you goosebumps all over your skin or when an orchestra gives a chilling note that has you at the end of your seat. That describes the way I felt reading Pennies. Written by the Queen of Darkness, Pepper Winters, Pennies is a story that truly had me at the edge of my seat and gave me goosebumps. But heed the warning. Pennies is not a love story or a fairytale. It is dark and keeps you guessing. Read at your own risk.
I am not going to say more about Pennies because I want you as the reader of my review to simply go into this book with your instinct and just read. I will tell you that this book was simply a masterpiece. Pennies was truly that amazing. The way it was writen was so clever that I was so captivated and mesmerized by the story. That is what is so special about Pepper Winters. She writes a story that brings so much emotions that you become so engrossed in her stories that you become so shocked when you reach the end. To tell you the truth, Pennies brought out something so different and so dynamic that I was left with the look of disbelief and atonishment. Pepper Winters completely went out of the box and brought out a story that was edgy and filled with so much angst and darkness to the point that my heart was pumping. It was glorious.
Not only does Pepper Winters give out a unique story but she gives us characters that add so much depth to the story. Her characters bring so much life to her stories that you become so addicted to them. You will love Pimlico and Elder. They are unique and dynamic characters that you begin to fall in love with them as you get to know their story.
"And who I was at the beginning wasn’t a worthwhile citizen. I was shadows and gore and screams. I’d lost my honour, my family, everything that made me human."
Pimlico was so different than the heroines in Pepper Winters other books like Nila from the Indebted series or Tess from the Monsters in the Dark series. She had fight but it is her vulnerable nature that spoke more to me. I felt for her predicament. Her thoughts and feelings made me so sad. She was so strong and I liked that she was no whiny heroine but I did not like her naivety and trust in the wrong people. Would they become her downfall?
"He was a contradiction. A conundrum. Something fascinating I couldn’t figure out."
Now Elder was a hero I could not get a good read on. He was a force that will tear you apart from the inside. He was an enigma. He was dangerous but I just could not help falling in love with his character. He was so dynamic that even his thoughts were just so mesmerizing. I wanted to know more about him. He had that swagger that made my heart melt. I just loved him.
Overall, Pennies is that story that will make you make your lose your sanity. It will make you become so vocal throughout that you won't realise. You will fall in love with this book like I did. Once you read it, you will be changed forever.
