Title: The Sect Author: Courtney Lane Genre: Dark/Gritty Type: Series. Wicked Trinity series, Book 1 Rating: 5 stars
I love Courtney Lane’s books. There are just pure magic and just pure genius. Her stories are so unique and so compelling. She has a way of making you react so much and instill so much emotion. Her stories have a way of messing up your mind. They even have your questioning your sanity but you just keep reading them because I am just addicted to them. The Sect is one of the stories that really has you thinking a lot. The Sect was truly a dark story that had so many dark elements that really messed my brain to the point of no return.
The Sect is about Keaton, a young woman who lives in the streets. One would think she is running away from something. Is she running away from someone? She decides to go to the soup kitchen and meets Noah a man who she has an attraction for. Clouded by her judgement, she is stolen away to some unknown place. She later finds out she has been taken to a cult where the sex without limits or morals is their religion. Nothing is at seems. Does living in this place bring out her worst nightmares? Told in Keaton’s POV, we are pulled into a dark world that truly brings out your darkest nightmares. I am not much on reading books about cults as soon as I opened this book, I knew I will be compelled to keep reading because this book truly blew me away. The Sect is not a love story. Trust me, there are no hearts in this book at all. Only pain, non- con sadomasochism, abuse, murder, sexual assault and other dark interesting things. Usually, I call them nice things because I love dark books like this. They creep into your mind and just simply torture your mind psychologically and The Sect really did torture my mind psychologically. The writing itself was just impeccable. Courtney Lane has a way of delving deep inside your soul with her words. Her dark and twisty words are just compelling that you just become drawn into the story. That is why I love reading her books. Her writing just draws you in and truly captivates you. She is truly a talented writer. Her writing truly comes alive and you just become addictive. She brings magic into her words. Ok, I am now on fangirl mode.
Not only did Courtney Lane deliver an awesome story but she truly delivered on her characters. They were complex and had many layers that truly brought out the story. Some characters were sick in the mind. Others were just simply dangerous. The most active characters were truly intriguing were Noah and Keaton. Together they truly were amazing. They showed amazing chemistry and they were compelling to read. Keaton was truly naïve in this story. I mean she was so blind to everything. I really want to shake to get her senses together. I wanted her to wake up. She did have some fight but she quickly became to submissive. It was interesting to read her character because in my opinion she did go through a lot. “You like being this way because it’s comfortable. You’ve become complacent while living a big fucking lie.” Noah was another big story. I mean I just could not get a good read on him when I was reading. I felt he was playing psychological games on both Keaton and me as a reader. All I know he was dangerous, commanding, controlling and just mean. Wow, his character truly was so complex and dynamic that I was blown away. Sometimes I did not know who he was and I loved the mystery. Truly unpredictable. I was in awe. I did not know if I could love him or hate him. “I lie to you constantly, Keaton. The sad thing is, I don’t think you’ll ever know what’s true or what’s false about me.”
Overall, The Sect is truly a dark, twisty and dimensional story that was truly addictive and really played psychological games to my mind.
